Touch is finally coming to MacBook displays

The MacBook Pro lineup is about to get a big shakeup later in 2026 with touch-screen capabilities and new interface elements. However, Apple won't refer to them as touch-first.

Rumors around Apple bringing touch to the Mac have gone on so long that the company had to share it had zero intention of merging iPad and Mac. Instead, it seems Apple will offer something in-between without sacrificing the experience already available.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro with touch screens will arrive by the end of 2026. These aren't going to be a part of the March releases, but instead, will be shared toward the end of the year.

The upgraded MacBook Pros will look similar to the existing models, but the display will be OLED and touch-sensitive. It will also sport a Dynamic Island at the top center.

macOS already has a feature that brings Live Activities to the Mac from iPhone, so a Dynamic Island will be right at home on the hardware.

Apple hasn't made macOS more touch-friendly, but it does have more elements similar to iPadOS than ever before. The report suggests that when using touch, the interface will swap to a more touch-friendly mode.

The touch display will have features like pinch-to-zoom, fast scrolling, and easy-to-tap targets. When tapping with a finger, pop-up menus will show a touch-friendly interface versus the cursor-optimized one.

However, Apple won't be encouraging users to use touch first. Also, this product won't be intended to replace the iPad Pro.

It seems the reasoning behind the addition is that more and more MacBook users are arriving from touch-first platforms. Apple's customer base starts with iPhone, iPad, Windows laptops, or Chromebooks and are often confused when they find the display isn't touch sensitive.

Previous rumors have suggested that Apple was preparing a redesigned MacBook Pro with OLED in late 2026 or early 2027. This rumor about a touch-screen model lines up with that expectation and we're giving it a possible rating.
