"Liquid detected in Lightning Connector" Alarm

Tonight my iPhone decided to wake me up in the middle of the night with a blaring "Liquid detected in Lightning Connector" Alarm. Who thought this was a good idea? My old phone used to display a little notice and just not charge, which I think is the appropriate amount of involvement in my charging activities. My iPhone is always on silent. My sleep is very important to me. And frankly, I think this level of Silent Mode override should be reserved for something like a tornado warning. How is this not a setting that can be changed?
