January 2026 Cyber Attacks Statistics
After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics for January 2026 where I collected and analyzed 178 events.
In January 2026, Cyber Crime continued to lead the Motivations chart with 76%, ahead of Cyber Espionage at number two with 19%, and Cyber Warfare with just three events.

After the cyber attacks timelines (part I and part II), it’s time to publish the statistics for January 2026 where I collected and analyzed 178 events.
In January 2026, Cyber Crime continued to lead the Motivations chart with 76%, ahead of Cyber Espionage at number two with 19%, and Cyber Warfare with just three events. Hacktivism is progressively fading down with just one single event, but my sixth sense suggests me that the next timeline will be different, since the Winter Olympics are already attracting some unwelcome attentions from hacktivists.
Unsurprisingly, Malware led the Attack Techniques, followed by Account Takeovers at number two with 14% (thanks to the widespread campaign carried out by the ShinyHunters threat actor), and Ransomware at place number three with 13%.
And once again Phishing led the Initial Access vectors with 17%, ahead of Social Engineering at place number two with 15% (another side effect of the ShinyHunters campaigns), and Supply Chain attacks that close the podium with 12%.
The Distribution of Targets was by organizations in the Information and Communication sector (sector J of the Standard Industrial Classification Revision 4) with 21% ahead of Public Administrations (sector O) with 13%, and organizations in the Professional and Scientific sector (sector M).
As always bear in mind that the sample refers exclusively to the attacks included in my timelines, available from public sources such as blogs and news sites. Obviously the sample cannot be complete, but only aims to provide an high level overview of the threat landscape.
