In the first half of February 2026 I collected 96 events (6.4 events/day) with a threat landscape dominated by malware with 33%, (it was 38% in the second half of last month, once again ahead of ransomware (up to 20% from 14%), and account takeovers, down to 8% from 14%.
As always, cyber crime led the motivations chart with 60% (a sharp increase from 74% of the previous timeline), ahead of cyber espionage (slightly up at 21% from 19%) of the previous timeline, and followed by hacktivism and cyber warfare, respectively with 2 and 1 events.
And for the second month in a row, the multiple campaigns carried out by the ShinyHunters had a remarkable impact in the initial access techniques with social engineering leading the pack with 20%, slightly up from 18%, ahead of the exploitation of public-facing app vulnerabilities (17%) and phishing (11%).
Target belonging to the Information and Communication sector were hit the most during the first half of February (despite the fell to 16% from 32%) once again ahead of Public Administrations (back to 14% from 12%) and Fintech with 5%.
Besides these trends, as always the timeline is rich of interesting events, such as mega breaches (now updated for 2026) and attacks against organizations in the fintech space, so my final suggestion does not change: browse the timeline for the details of all the events collected in this fortnight
